“This must be Thursday,' said Arthur to himself, sinking low over his beer. 'I never could get the hang of Thursdays.”
― Douglas Adams, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
It was on Thursday, May 25, that we kicked off the second Towel Day India edition at Kunzum Books, Vasant Vihar, in association with Pan Macmillan India.
If you’re wondering what towels have to do with books, we’ll explain :)
Psst: do take a minute to sign up if you haven’t - for insights, fun updates, reading recommendations and tips to build a reading habit.
All you need to know about Towel Day
Every year, on May 25, Douglas Adams fans from all over the galaxy celebrate Towel Day to honour his legacy and work.
He’s known best for his book, the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, a hilarious, satirical adventure set in outer space.
But the book is so much more than just that. If you haven’t read it yet, we’re envious. You get to experience it for the first time ever!
In the book, the actual Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy serves as a Wikipedia of sorts before Wikipedia even existed - an essential guide that a person hitchhiking across the universe must have.
On Towel Day, Douglas Adams fans carry a towel with them all day, wherever they go. Here’s why:
Fans of the author from all over the world, plan fun events celebrating him and his work. They range from costume parties to dramatic enactments, Vogon poetry recitations and a ton more.
For the past two years in a row, we’ve worked to bring the fun and magic of Towel Day to fans, prospective fans and curious folks in India through our Towel Day event. Read on to know what went down at this edition!
All the fun from Towel Day: India Edition
For the Towel Day India edition, we partnered with Kunzum Books for the second time (shoutout to their Chief Curator, Subir for all the help and for being a fellow frood!) and hosted it at their Vasant Vihar store.
A section of Kunzum featured picks from our 42 Good Reads of the Internet Zine that has carefully curated reads from authors from across time. Visitors could grab a sweet 20% off on the collection for a limited time.
We began with a little intro and a reading from Don’t Panic by Neil Gaiman, sharing the unique origin story of the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy.
Readers got to try (non-alcoholic) Pan Galactic Gargle Blasters while they listened :)
The team from Pan Macmillan, the OG publishers of The Greatest Book in the Galaxy hosted a super tough but fun Trivia Quiz for true froods. Winners got to walk away with custom towels and a copy of our special Douglas Adams zine (shoutout to Radhika from their team for making this possible!)
We also introduced Volume 2 of our 42 Good Reads of the Internet zine. Watch out for a comprehensive guide to the zines soon!
To conclude Towel Day, we had a fun and free-flowing interaction with everyone who was there for it. Here are some glimpses :)
It’s wonderful to know that there are so many of you out there that want to actively build a reading habit or explore new ways to read. Most of all, we were pleasantly surprised to meet so many froods!
We’re looking forward to hosting more experiences for Readers of 42 and others who are curious about all that we do.
Join in the fun and unlock access to a whole new world of reading!
Read, Watch, Share and Enjoy
