Welcome to another edition of Letters to the Reader by Project Bibliotherapy. Read on for an upcoming literary event in Delhi, a giveaway and our recommendations :)
A Suitable Agency’s Suitable Conversations
We first came upon ‘Suitable Conversations’ just after the country and the world had been turned upside down with the global pandemic in late 2021. We had just begun to dip a very careful toe into explorations of the outside world, post-vaccination.
Sundar Nursery is one of the most gorgeous spots in Delhi, and we came upon a series of events organized by renowned Indian literary agency ‘A Suitable Agency’. It featured conversations between the finest authors and personalities in the Indian literary world, and it felt like just the kind of place we’d feel at home in.
We ended up attending every single one of the conversations that spanned the course of the winter season. There’s something so magical about sitting under a canopy of trees, their branches spreading across the sky, on cushions and durries placed on the grass. We much preferred them to the fold-up chairs that were also provided. It made us feel like we were in a close and intimate baithak.
Often, conversations were punctuated by birdsong, and caramel-sweet sunshine that wrapped us in a warm embrace. We listened to diverse perspectives, and discussed books, history, and Indian life among other topics. We met authors and chatted with them about our favourite reads, while they signed books. We got their thoughts on what was a very new concept at the time: our zines, now called our Reader Companions. Most of all, we experienced reading for the first time in our lives in such a mindful and engaged manner.
One of our fondest memories from the sessions was when a proud peacock started to dance on the roof, right in the middle of a session related to Indian history. The peacock seemed rather unbothered about having an unexpected audience but it created a sense of the magical in our experience of the conversation.
